In 2006, when Wolfgang was 15 years old, his father Eddie Van Halen talked about his son’s music talent on The Howard Stern Show.
He said, “Wait ‘til you hear this kid play bass, guitar and drums. He can do anything I do on guitar…the name ‘Van Halen’, the family legacy is gonna go on way after I’m gone ‘cause this kid is just a natural.”
In February 2015, Eddie said that Wolfgang had started working on a solo album. The recording happened at 5150 Studios and was completed by 2017.
The release was delayed because Wolfgang wanted to spend more time with his father, who was getting sicker. In June 2019,
Wolfgang appeared on his mother’s Food Network show and said he had finished the album.The first single, “Distance,” came out on November 16, 2020,
as a tribute to his father, who passed away from a stroke on October 6, 2020, after a long illness with throat cancer.
Wolfgang shared that he had started writing the song years earlier as a way to cope with his father’s illness, knowing there would be a sad ending with his father
, who was also his bandmate and best friend.In February 2021, Wolfgang announced that Mammoth WVH’s debut album would be released on June 11 of that year.
Later that month, he said the band would become his main project, even though it had started as a solo effort.
He explained that he recorded the whole album himself as a challenge and mentioned being inspired by Dave Grohl’s early work with Foo Fighters.Wolfgang named the band Mammoth
WVH after his father’s old band, which later became Van Halen. He said the name came from a mix of inspirations.
As a child, he thought the name “Mammoth” was the coolest and dreamed of naming his own band that way. He admired Eddie’s many roles,
like being the lead singer of Mammoth, and decided to use the name because he wanted to write, perform, and produce the album by himself.
Once he settled on the name, he showed it to his father, who loved it and gave his blessing.
